San Diego County Veteran of the Year

Community Outreach Recognition Program of:

The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park San Diego County Veteran of the Year (VOY)

Program History

It is well known that military veterans are excellent employees and citizens. They have outstanding work habits, are motivated, readily accept responsibility, and are team players. The "Veteran of the Year" program was established in 1989 to recognize the contributions of veterans to the San Diego community. In 2001, the program expanded to encourage many civic, government, corporate, and service organizations to honor their veterans by selecting their "Veteran of the Year". From the pool of Veterans of the Year candidates, only one is selected as the "San Diego County Veteran of the Year". By honoring a veteran, it shows that the veterans contribute greatly to the morale of the work force, exceed expectations in their duties, volunteer in the community and are good citizens. This program of the Veteran Museum at Balboa Park recognizes our heroes who continue to serve and contribute as our friends and neighbors.

The program has three ways to recognize individuals and organizations:

  1. San Diego County Veteran of the Year as described above. If selected, the SDCVOY will represent the veteran community at special events, Padre games, parades and other military-related ceremonies.
  2. San Diego Meritorious Support of Veterans Award: The program recognizes one for-profit corporation that contributes, supports and serves active duty personnel and Veterans in San Diego County.
  3. San Diego Veterans Allegiance Award: The program recognizes one non-profit agency or organization that contributes, supports and serves active duty personnel and Veterans in San Diego County.

All three awards are announced at the "Veteran of the Year Recognition Luncheon" which is typically the Friday before Veteran's Day.

The 2015 Veteran of the Year judges selected Mr. Ed Burger as the 2015-2016 Veteran of the Year. The 2015-2016 Allegiance Award was presented to American Legion District 22, and the 2015-2016 Meritorious Support Award was presented to WAXIE Sanitary Supply.

The 2015 Will Hays Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Jon Nachison for his many years of service and significant achievements on behalf of veterans. The Lifetime Achievement Award was renamed to the Will Hays Lifetime Achievement Award for his continued dedication to serving those who served.
